Navy News
Two items of interest from the US Navy.
First, the replacement for the Kitty Hawk as the Navy's Forward Deployed Carrier has been announced. In 2008, the USS George Washington will arrive at its new home in Yokosuka, Japan. This will mark the first time a nuclear powered warship has been permanently based in Japan. It is a significant shift in Japanese policy and reflects the concerns that country has about regional security, something that is to a large measure guaranteed by America's presence.
Second, the Navy announced that the USS Freedom, the first littoral
combat ship of the LCS 1 class, will be homeported in San Diego. The Freedom should be delivered to the Navy this month and will be in San Diego in early 2007. For more on the littoral combat ship, go here. .
