Blanco Gets A Pass
Kathleen Blanco, the governor of Louisiana, got a pass in front of the Senate yesterday, while asking for money for her state. She asked not to be questioned about her performance in the wake of Katrina and, amazingly, the Committee agreed.
Why?
It is incomprehensible to me that Blanco would not be subjected to the same grilling that former FEMA head Mike Brown received (and deserved) earlier this week. From what I have read, I think that Blanco bears a substantial portion of the blame for the poor planning and poor response to Katrina. Even if you don't believe that, shouldn't Congress use every opportunity to get to the truth and determine who did what? The decisions made put tens-of-thousands of Americans needlessly at risk. We cannot allow there to be a few token resignations/firings, followed by the usual 'committees to nowhere' and content free partisan attacks.

I was thinking when I read reports of this that it couldn't be right because I thought people at every level have something to answer for about the response. And to ask for money on top of that? Wow, that's chutzpah!
Well, you can't say the investigation is partisan when the Republicans show up, the Democrats boycott, and a blame-worthy Democrat still gets a pass.
Nonetheless, an independent, non-partisan commission, a la 9/11, should be called for.
