Baltimore Mayor Opens Mouth, Inserts Foot, Says "Mmm, Mmm, Good"

Democrat Martin O'Malley of Baltimore had this to say yesterday about the Administration's plan to cut $2b from community development programs;
"These cuts, ladies and gentlemen, are sad. Irresponsible. They are also dishonest. Back on September 11, terrorists attacked our metropolitan cores, two of America's great cities. They did that because they knew that was where they could do the most damage and weaken us the most. Years later, we are given a budget proposal by our commander in chief, the president of the United States. And with a budget ax, he is attacking America's cities. He is attacking our metropolitan core."

Quite appropriately, most of those present - this occurred during a meeting of local officials - were shocked by the comparison of program cuts to one of the greatest atrocities ever perpetrated against America.

As a public figure, the Mayor should hold himself to a higher standard than this. In what way does rhetoric like this - rhetoric that both dishonors the memory of those murdered by the Islamists and detracts from whatever argument he had been making, since attention is focused on this statement, not whatever merit his complaints may have - serve the people the Mayor is supposed to represent?
